TROY JACKSON join the pop music revolution
Troy Jackson is a Afro-Native Canadian Recording Artist, Writer, and Host . He has written for The Loop Magazine (Vancouver 1998-2001) and Fab Magazine (Toronto 2007-2009) respectively.
Other notable writing credits are “Hoods” a screen-play which was short listed by CBC (2003) and collaboratively co-re-writing“The Bacchae” by Euripides -an electronic opera (2003/2005) (www.screamingweenie.com/show_bacchae .html).
He started his singing career after performing with a cast of Vancouver performers opening for a free show headlined by the one and only Michael Franti (Spearhead) at the Sugar Refinary (2000). "An almost gay bashing" pushed him into the therapy of curating and hosting spoken word/cabaret events at The Alibi Room (Vancouver 2003) where he learned from and welcomed to the microphone, Reggie Watts, Malcolm Jahmal Warner, Jarrett Martineau , Rachel Flood and Shane Koyczan . He performed his first spoken word piece “Nigger Faggot” at “Black is Spoken Here” Tales of Ordinary Madness hosted by the prolific Tanya Evanson (2001).
Jackson is vocally trained in Gospel, RnB, Classical and Jazz respectively. He studied with Chico Thomaso (Marvin Gaye), Judith Rabinovitch (Sarah McLachlan) and the late great Ray Carroll (The Platters).
In 2005 after co-starring in the role he wrote for Dionysus in “The Bacchae-an electronic opera Jackson left Vancouver to tour with the band Unspoken (Mikela Jay/Lenard Paul) 2005). In 2006 Jackson moved to Toronto after living and performing in Berlin, where he has performed at The Gladstone Hotel, The Drake Hotel, Cameron House, the Rivoli, Ciao Edie, Dundas Square, Lula Lounge, and The Sister.
Jackson released his debut EP in 2009 “Cd of Troy” featuring the track for the Video “The Batty Boys Revenge”-An Anti-Homophobia Pop Music Anthem (Director Alison Duke) which premiered at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), with screenings at The Inside Out Film Festival (Toronto-2010), Image Nation (Montreal-2010), The Regent Park Film Festival (2011), The North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (2011), The TIFF Lightbox (Toronto-2011) and most recently the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF-2012).
Troy has fearlessly performed in Toronto, Vancouver, Amsterdam, Berlin and London. He has hosted the Blockorama Stage (PrideToronto/ 2009), was a vocalist on the El-Farouk Khaki Grand Marshall Float for a crowd of 1 million (Pride 2009) and at Vancouver Pride (Davie Street Festival/Sunset Beach 2009, 2011). He has shared the stage with Lorraine Segato, Rosina Kazi, Nicholas Murray, Kim Katrin Crosby, Ryan G. Hinds, Vivek Shraya, Farzana Doctor, Michael Venus, and disco diva Carol Jiani.
Troy has hosted specials on BPM Television (Top 100 Gay Anthems (2008), Pride Toronto Special (2009). He has acted and sung in the sci-fi movie “Infest Wisely” by Canadian Sci-Fi writer Jim Munroe (2007). Two other music videos of note are “Koma” (Director Mikela Jay-2007) and “Overcast Sky” (MAGT)-Director Mikela Jay-2012)
